In our stressed out society, it’s no surprise that the popularity of CBD has skyrocketed over the past few years. CBD is a natural remedy for a number of ailments, and with no psychoactive properties, it’s one you can take any time of day. One of the most common uses for CBD is for anxiety relief, and although most of the evidence for this is anecdotal, there is actually some science behind how it does this.

How does CBD reduce anxiety?

There are a few interactions between our bodies and CBD that all contribute to a feeling of less anxiety. One of these is with our endocannabinoid system. CBD binds to our cannabinoid receptors to influence certain body functions, like sleep, appetite and mood. Specifically, CBD activates a serotonin receptor, which can increase the production of serotonin, our “feel good” chemical.

The physical effects of CBD can also aid in reducing stress and anxiety. It’s true that stress can cause our bodies to react a certain way, but it can work the other way around, too. Sometimes even a rapid heartbeat can trick us into thinking we’re anxious about something. This is where CBD can really help nip any creeping anxieties in the bud.

CBD has been shown to reduce the heart rate and even lower blood pressure associated with stress. One study demonstrated that “acute administration of CBD reduces resting blood pressure and the blood pressure increase [due] to stress in humans, associated with increased heart rate.”

Studies have suggested that CBD can relieve all types of anxiety, such as social anxiety disorder, panic disorder, PTSD, obsessive-compulsive disorder and more. So, no matter why you need a little “chill pill,” CBD may be able to help take the edge off.
